This 3D lake model needs a browser with WebGL. Ask us about Spider Lake frontage and we’ll send you the depth map.

Rennie Lake’s bottom comes from the Michigan DNR lake survey, whose deepest contour is 27 feet. Spider Lake has no public state depth survey, so it shows in gray; the Spider Lake Property Owner’s Association lists it at about 38 feet in Deep Cove. Height is exaggerated so the drop offs show. A guide, not a navigation chart.

Living on Spider Lake

Spider Lake sits in East Bay Township, about twenty minutes southeast of downtown Traverse City, with Rennie Lake just next door.

It gets its name from its shape. Long arms and coves reach out in every direction, so many homes look across a quiet bay instead of open water, and the lake has about 11.5 miles of shoreline.

The water is fairly clear over a mostly sand bottom, fed by springs rather than a river. The association counts 464 parcels around the lake, a mix of year round homes, cottages, small resorts and rentals.

Frontage is listed as private or shared, and every card above says which one it is.

  • Size

About 450 acres on Spider Lake and 238 acres on Rennie Lake.

  • Depth

About 38 feet in Deep Cove on Spider Lake, with most of the lake shallow. Rennie Lake reaches 27 feet.

  • Islands

Five on Spider Lake. Three are public national forest land and two are private.

  • Watershed

Spider Lake drains through Arbutus Creek into the Boardman River watershed.

  • Association

The Spider Lake Property Owner’s Association has a welcome packet for new owners plus pages on boating rules, water quality and invasive species.

  • DNR launch

A public boat access site on the west side of Spider Lake, off Grace Road.

  • Public islands

Three national forest islands on Spider Lake, a favorite stop by boat. No dogs.

  • All sports

Both are all sports lakes. Spider Lake has no wake zones near shore and in shallow areas, so check the current boating rules before you go.

Getting on the water

Spider Lake is an all sports lake with a public DNR launch, so you can trailer a boat in if your home does not have its own dock yet.

Fishing leans to largemouth bass and northern pike, with plenty of bluegill, rock bass and crappie. Pike under 24 inches go back. Rennie Lake holds bluegill and largemouth bass too.

Buying on Spider Lake: what to know

  • Well and septic at sale

Since 2026 Grand Traverse County requires a well and septic evaluation for homes within 300 feet of a lake or stream before the sale closes. The report can change a deal, so we read it early.

  • Private or shared frontage

Shared frontage usually means an association lot and dock rules. Ask for the association documents before you write an offer.

  • Short term rentals

There are rentals and small resorts on the lake, but rules change. We check the current township ordinance for the exact address.

  • Bay or open water

A home deep in a cove is calmer and more private. A point lot gets the long view and more boat traffic. Spend time on both.

  • Depth off the dock

Most of Spider Lake is shallow, and there is no state depth map for it. Look in person, ideally from a boat.

  • Spider or Rennie

Rennie Lake is smaller and right next door. Drive both before you decide.

Spider Lake questions

How deep is Spider Lake?

About 38 feet at its deepest, in Deep Cove, according to the Spider Lake Property Owner’s Association, which says about 75 percent of the lake is shallow. Other references list 32 to 36 feet. There is no public Michigan DNR depth survey for Spider Lake, so it shows in gray on our map.

How big is Spider Lake?

About 445 to 450 acres, depending on the source. Its long arms and coves give it roughly 11.5 miles of shoreline, which is a lot for a lake its size, and it has five islands.

How big and deep is Rennie Lake?

Rennie Lake is about 238 acres and 27 feet at its deepest, based on the Michigan DNR survey used for our map. It sits just southeast of Spider Lake, about 13 miles southeast of Traverse City.

Can you visit the islands on Spider Lake?

Three of the five islands are public land in the Huron-Manistee National Forests, and two are private. The association notes that dogs are not allowed on the public islands.

Where is public access on Spider Lake?

There is a Michigan DNR boat access site on the west side of the lake off Grace Road.

What fish are in Spider Lake?

Largemouth bass and northern pike are the main game fish, along with bluegill, rock bass, pumpkinseed, black crappie, yellow perch and some smallmouth bass. Rennie Lake is known for bluegill and largemouth bass.

Where does Spider Lake get its water?

It has no true inlet. Spider Lake is fed by underwater springs, rain and runoff, and drains through one small outlet at the end of Deep Cove into Arbutus Creek, part of the Boardman River watershed.

Do Spider Lake homes need a septic inspection to sell?

Yes, in most cases. Since January 1, 2026 Grand Traverse County requires a time of transfer evaluation for homes within 300 feet of a lake or stream that have a well or septic system, before the sale can close. We get it scheduled early so it does not hold up closing.
