This 3D lake model needs a browser with WebGL. Ask us about Interlochen Lakes frontage and we’ll send you the depth map.

The lake bottoms come from the Michigan DNR lake survey, with the height exaggerated so the drop offs show. Surveys can be decades old, so it is a guide, not a navigation chart.

Living on the Interlochen lakes

Green Lake and Duck Lake sit side by side about 15 miles southwest of Traverse City, with Interlochen State Park and Interlochen Center for the Arts on the land between them.

Both lakes are deep and clear, close to 100 feet at their deepest, and both have plenty of homes and cottages without feeling crowded. Duck Lake has more larger parcels with long frontage. Green Lake is the source of the Betsie River.

Summers here come with music. Interlochen Center for the Arts, founded in 1928, runs a summer arts camp and a year round arts academy, and its concerts draw people from all over the region.

Interlochen lake real estate runs from older cottages to newer year round homes and wooded lots. Frontage is listed as private or shared, and every card above says which one it is and which lake it is on.

  • Green Lake

About 2,000 acres and 102 feet deep, in Green Lake and Grant townships.

  • Duck Lake

About 1,930 acres and 98 feet deep, fed by trout streams on its east side.

  • Between the lakes

Interlochen State Park, the arts campus and the village sit on the narrow strip between the two.

  • Betsie River

Starts at the south end of Green Lake and runs west to Lake Michigan.

  • Schools

Most of Green Lake Township is in Traverse City Area Public Schools, with parts in Kingsley, Buckley or Benzie Central. Check by parcel.

  • Interlochen State Park

Beaches, boat launches on both lakes and a large campground, with a stand of old growth pine.

  • Green Lake west shore

A second DNR boat launch on Green Lake’s west side.

Getting on the water

The state park gives everyone easy access to both lakes, so even an off water home here keeps you close to a beach and a launch.

Both lakes are managed as trout lakes with stocked lake trout, and DNR surveys turn up good bass, pike and panfish too.

Buying on the Interlochen lakes: what to know

  • Septic inspection at sale

Since 2026 Grand Traverse County requires a well and septic evaluation at sale for waterfront homes. We get it scheduled early.

  • Short term rentals

Green Lake Township licenses rentals every year and the license ends when the home sells. We check the rules for the exact address.

  • Private or shared frontage

Shared frontage usually means an association lot and dock rules. Ask for the association documents before you write an offer.

  • Green or Duck

Both are deep and clear. Duck Lake has more larger parcels and shallow water near shore; Green Lake connects to the Betsie River. See both.

  • Summer traffic

The arts camp and state park are busy in July and August. Visit in season to see what the road and the lake are like.

  • School district

Several districts meet here, so confirm the district for the parcel before you count on it.

Interlochen Lakes questions

How big and deep are the lakes at Interlochen?

Green Lake is about 2,000 acres and about 102 feet at its deepest. Duck Lake is about 1,930 acres and about 98 feet deep. Both average around 35 feet, and Duck Lake has more shallow water near shore.

What does Interlochen mean?

Between the lakes. The town, Interlochen State Park and Interlochen Center for the Arts all sit on the narrow strip of land between Green Lake and Duck Lake.

Are Green Lake and Duck Lake connected?

Yes, by water. Duck Lake drains from its northwest shore into the north tip of Green Lake, and the Betsie River starts at the south end of Green Lake and runs west to Lake Michigan.

Where is public access?

Interlochen State Park, acquired in 1917 as Michigan’s first state park, has beaches and boat launches on both lakes plus a large campground. Green Lake also has a second DNR launch on its west shore.

What fish are in Green Lake and Duck Lake?

The DNR manages both as trout lakes and stocks lake trout. Its surveys also found good smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, rock bass and yellow perch.

Do Interlochen lake homes need a septic inspection to sell?

Yes. Since January 1, 2026 Grand Traverse County requires a well and septic evaluation, approved by the health department before closing, for homes within 300 feet of the water with a well or septic system.

Can I rent an Interlochen lake home short term?

Green Lake Township requires an annual license for rentals under 30 nights, with a well and septic inspection every three years and occupancy limits. Licenses end at a change of ownership, so a buyer must apply again.
