The lake bottom comes from the Michigan DNR lake survey contours. Lake Bellaire reaches about 95 feet. Clam Lake has no detailed state survey, so it shows in gray; the Watershed Council lists it at about 27 feet. Height is exaggerated so the drop offs show. A guide, not a navigation chart.

Lake Bellaire is a deep lake just southwest of the village of Bellaire, with Clam Lake downstream on the way to Torch Lake.
Lake Bellaire reaches about 95 feet, and its shore is mostly sand and gravelly sand with very little natural rock. Much of the lake is ringed by wetlands, which help filter the water and give it a quieter, more natural feel than some of the bigger lakes on the chain.
Clam Lake is long and narrow, sitting in a valley between Lake Bellaire and Torch Lake. The Grass River connects the two lakes, and the Clam River runs from Clam Lake into Torch Lake, so a dock on either one reaches a long stretch of the Chain of Lakes.
Lake Bellaire real estate runs from older cottages to newer year round homes, with Bellaire’s shops and restaurants close by. Frontage is listed as private or shared, and every card above says which one it is.
Size
Lake Bellaire is about 1,789 acres with 12 miles of shoreline. Clam Lake adds about 437 acres.
Depth
Lake Bellaire reaches about 95 feet. Clam Lake tops out around 27 feet.
Connections
The Intermediate River flows in from Intermediate Lake. The Grass River runs out to Clam Lake, and the Clam River on to Torch Lake.
Grass River Natural Area
More than 1,500 acres of protected wetland along the Grass River, with trails and boardwalks.
Community
The village of Bellaire sits just northeast of the lake, with Intermediate Lake upstream and Torch Lake downstream.
Fisherman’s Paradise
A Michigan DNR launch on the east side with a paved ramp and trailer parking.
Other DNR sites
Smaller public access sites around the lake, also run by the DNR.
Down the chain
Boat through the Grass River and Clam Lake to reach Torch Lake.
Getting on the water
Lake Bellaire is a big, deep all sports lake, and Clam Lake is a calmer, narrow lake that works well for paddling and fishing. From either one you can run down the Clam River into Torch Lake.
Fishing covers both cold and warm water: lake trout, whitefish and trout in the deep water, plus walleye, northern pike, bass, perch and bluegill closer to shore.
Buying on Lake Bellaire: what to know
Septic inspection at sale
Antrim County leaves septic rules at sale to each township, and they differ around the lake. We check the exact address and get any inspection scheduled early.
Private or shared frontage
Shared frontage usually means an association lot and dock rules. Ask for the association documents before you write an offer.
Resort shared frontage
Some resort condos near Bellaire list shared Lake Bellaire frontage but sit well back from the water. Ask how far the lake is and what access comes with the unit.
Bellaire or Clam
Lake Bellaire is big and deep. Clam Lake is narrow, shallower and quieter. Spend time on both before you decide.
Depth off the dock
Some shorelines drop off fast and some stay shallow for a long way. Use the 3D map, then look in person.
Buying a lake lot
Before you buy to build, confirm the soils will take a septic system and check the township shoreline setback. Wetlands around the lake can limit where you build.
