The lake bottom comes from the Michigan DNR lake survey, whose deepest contour is 150 feet; Elk Lake reaches about 192 feet. Height is exaggerated so the drop offs show. A guide, not a navigation chart.

Living on Elk Lake

Elk Lake is deep, clear and close to town: it runs about 9 miles south from Elk Rapids, with Lake Skegemog joined to its southeast end.

Elk Lake is the second deepest inland lake in Michigan, and its cold, clear water often looks emerald green in summer. Most shorelines have a sandy shelf before the bottom drops away, which you can see on the 3D map.

Lake Skegemog is a different feel: wide, shallow and warmer, with more marsh and wildlife along the shore. The Torch River comes in to Skegemog from Torch Lake, so a dock on either lake reaches a long stretch of the Chain of Lakes.

Elk Lake real estate runs from older cottages near Elk Rapids to large newer homes along the east and west shores. Frontage is listed as private or shared, and every card above says which one it is.

  • Size

Elk Lake is about 8,100 acres and 9 miles long. Lake Skegemog adds about 2,750 acres.

  • Depth

Elk Lake reaches about 192 feet, averaging about 67. Skegemog tops out around 29 feet.

  • Outlet

The Elk River at Elk Rapids flows into East Grand Traverse Bay past a hydroelectric dam.

  • Lake association

The Elk-Skegemog Lakes Association works on water quality, invasive species and swimmer’s itch education.

  • Communities

Elk Rapids at the north end, with Williamsburg, Kewadin and Whitewater Township around the lake.

  • Whitewater Township Park

A two lane paved ramp, beach, pavilion and campground on the lake.

  • Elk Lake ramp

A smaller one lane ramp on E Elk Lake Drive.

  • Elk Rapids

Marina access in town, close to the Elk River and East Bay.

Getting on the water

Elk Lake is a big, deep all sports lake, and Skegemog next door is a calmer place to paddle and fish. From either one you can run up the Torch River to Torch Lake.

Fishing leans cold water: lake trout, including a strain the DNR studies, plus smallmouth bass, whitefish and plenty of rock bass.

Buying on Elk Lake: what to know

  • Septic inspection at sale

Grand Traverse County requires a well and septic evaluation at sale for waterfront homes. Antrim County is handled by township. We get it scheduled early.

  • Private or shared frontage

Shared frontage usually means an association lot and dock rules. Ask for the association documents before you write an offer.

  • Short term rentals

Elk Rapids requires registration and Whitewater Township has been working on its rules. We check the current ordinance for the exact address.

  • Elk or Skegemog

Elk Lake is deep and clear. Skegemog is shallow, warm and quieter. Spend time on both before you decide.

  • Depth off the dock

Some shorelines drop off fast and some stay shallow for a long way. Use the 3D map, then look in person.

  • Two counties

The lake sits on the Antrim and Grand Traverse county line, so taxes, schools and permits depend on the side you buy on.

Elk Lake questions

How deep is Elk Lake?

About 192 feet at its deepest, which makes it the second deepest inland lake in Michigan. The average depth is about 67 feet. Lake Skegemog, next door, is shallow by comparison at about 29 feet.

How big is Elk Lake?

About 8,100 acres, roughly 9 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, with around 26 miles of shoreline. Lake Skegemog adds about 2,750 acres.

Where does Elk Lake drain?

Into East Grand Traverse Bay through the Elk River at Elk Rapids. The dam there has held the lake a few feet higher than its natural level since the 1800s, and it still makes hydroelectric power.

Is Elk Lake connected to Torch Lake?

Yes. Torch Lake flows through the Torch River into Lake Skegemog, which opens into Elk Lake, so you can boat between all three. They are part of the Elk River Chain of Lakes.

Where is public access on Elk Lake?

Whitewater Township Park has a two lane paved ramp, a beach and a campground. There is also a smaller ramp on E Elk Lake Drive, and Elk Rapids has marina access.

What fish are in Elk Lake?

Elk Lake is a cold, clear lake known for lake trout, including a strain DNR biologists study, along with smallmouth bass, whitefish and rock bass.

Do Elk Lake homes need a septic inspection to sell?

On the Grand Traverse County side, yes: since January 1, 2026 the county requires a time of transfer evaluation for homes within 300 feet of the water with a well or septic system. The Antrim County side is handled by township, so we check the exact address.
