This 3D lake model needs a browser with WebGL. Ask us about Long Lake frontage and we’ll send you the depth map.

The lake bottom comes from the Michigan DNR lake survey, with the height exaggerated so the drop offs show. Surveys can be decades old and sandbars move, so it is a guide, not a navigation chart.

Living on Long Lake

Long Lake is the biggest lake in Grand Traverse County, about 7 miles southwest of downtown Traverse City.

It is an all sports lake with clear, low nutrient water, and most of the shoreline is year round homes rather than cottages. The north end runs along N Long Lake Road with the township parks and the general store. The south and west sides are quieter, with peninsula neighborhoods like Peninsula Estates and Long Lake Peninsula where many homes share association frontage.

Five islands sit in the middle. Fox and South Islands are a nature preserve run by the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, and Long and Picnic Islands are open to the public for day use. A shallow channel at the north end lets you boat into Mickey Lake.

Long Lake real estate runs from 1940s cottages on small lots to newer year round homes with over 100 feet of frontage. Frontage is listed as private or shared, and the difference matters for price, dock rights and resale. Every card above says which one it is.

  • Size

About 2,860 acres with roughly 17 miles of shoreline, counting the islands.

  • Depth

Up to about 90 feet (88 feet at the deepest surveyed point), and about 25 feet on average.

  • Islands

Long, South, Fox, Picnic and Brush. Brush Island is private.

  • Lake association

The Long Lake Association runs swimmer’s itch, milfoil and water testing programs for Long, Mickey and Ruth Lakes.

  • Township

Mostly Long Lake Township, with the southern tip in Green Lake Township.

  • Gilbert Park

Boat launch, dock and a sandy beach at 9912 N Long Lake Road.

  • Crescent Shores launch

A one lane concrete ramp with parking at the end of Crescent Shores Road.

  • Taylor Park

A small swim beach at 9339 N Long Lake Road, across from Long Lake Grocery.

  • The Timbers

A 250 acre township recreation area with about 2,000 feet of Long Lake shoreline.

Getting on the water

If you buy off the water or on shared frontage, you still have easy access. There are two public launches and two township beaches on the north shore. Non members of the Long Lake Association pay a launch fee.

Fishing is a big part of the lake. The Michigan DNR calls it best known for walleye, smallmouth bass and yellow perch, and its last survey also turned up northern pike, largemouth bass and bluegill. The walleye now reproduce on their own after decades of stocking.

The islands are day use only: no overnight camping, campfires or pets.

Buying on Long Lake: what to know

  • Septic inspection at sale

Long Lake Township requires a point of sale inspection for homes on septic, and since 2026 Grand Traverse County also requires a well and septic evaluation for waterfront homes. The seller arranges it before closing, and the report can change a deal, so we read it early.

  • Private or shared frontage

Shared frontage usually means an association lot and dock rules. Ask for the association documents before you write an offer.

  • Short term rentals

The township allows them with a certificate and rules on occupancy and septic capacity. We check the current ordinance for the exact address.

  • Water depth off the dock

Some shorelines drop off fast and some stay shallow and sandy for a long way. Use the 3D map, then look at it in person.

  • Schools

Most of the lake is in Traverse City Area Public Schools: Long Lake Elementary, then Traverse City West Senior High. Boundaries go by address.

  • Older lake cottages

Many Long Lake homes started as 1940s cottages. Plan on checking the foundation, the well and the setback rules if you want to rebuild.

Long Lake questions

How deep is Long Lake in Traverse City?

Long Lake reaches about 90 feet deep. The deepest point on the state lake survey map is 88 feet, near Long Island, and the average depth is about 25 feet. Much of the shoreline has a sandy shelf before it drops off, which you can see on the 3D map above.

How big is Long Lake?

About 2,860 acres, which makes it the largest lake in Grand Traverse County. It has five islands and connects by a shallow boat channel to Mickey Lake.

Is there public access to Long Lake?

Yes. There are two public boat launches, at Gilbert Park on N Long Lake Road and at the end of Crescent Shores Road, plus township beaches at Gilbert Park and Taylor Park. A launch fee applies for non-members of the Long Lake Association.

What fish are in Long Lake?

The Michigan DNR describes Long Lake as best known for walleye, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. Its 2017 survey also found northern pike, largemouth bass, bluegill and rock bass. Walleye now reproduce in the lake on their own.

Do Long Lake homes need a septic inspection to sell?

In Long Lake Township, yes. Since 2009 the township has required a point of sale inspection for homes on a septic system, done by a township approved inspector before closing. The seller arranges it, and the report goes to the buyer and the township. On top of that, since January 1, 2026 Grand Traverse County requires a time of transfer evaluation for homes within 300 feet of a lake or stream that have a well or septic system.

Can I rent a Long Lake home short term?

Long Lake Township allows short term rentals with a township certificate, and the rules cover septic capacity, occupancy and a local contact. Rules change, so ask us to pull the current ordinance for a specific address before you buy.

What schools serve Long Lake?

Most of the lake is in Traverse City Area Public Schools. Long Lake Elementary is on N Long Lake Road and feeds Traverse City West Senior High. Boundaries go by address, so check the TCAPS map for a specific home.
