Torch Lake is the longest inland lake in Michigan: 19 miles of deep, clear water between Elk Rapids and Bellaire, about 45 minutes from Traverse City.
The lake is narrow and deep. Most shorelines have a sandy shelf that runs out before the bottom drops away into the middle trough, which you can see on the 3D map. The west side along US-31 gets the morning sun on the water and the east side gets the sunsets.
It is part of the Elk River Chain of Lakes. The Clam River comes in from Clam Lake and Lake Bellaire at the north end, and the Torch River runs out the south end into Lake Skegemog and Elk Lake, so you can boat a long way from a Torch Lake dock.
Torch Lake real estate runs from older cottages on the sandy south end to large newer homes on the bluffs, plus wooded lakefront lots for building. Frontage is listed as private or shared, and every card above says which one it is.
Size
About 18,500 acres, 19 miles long and about 2 miles wide, with roughly 41 miles of shoreline.
Depth
About 300 feet at the deepest point, with an average around 110 feet.
The sandbar
A wide, shallow sand shelf at the south end near the Torch River bridge.
Chain of Lakes
Connected to Clam Lake and Lake Bellaire to the north and to Lake Skegemog and Elk Lake to the south.

Getting on the water
Even without frontage you can get on Torch Lake from several public launches, and a Michigan Recreation Passport covers the DNR sites. On summer weekends the sandbar at the south end is the main gathering spot.
Torch is a cold water lake. Lake trout have long been the main catch in DNR surveys, with whitefish, cisco, smallmouth bass and perch too. The lake often does not freeze over completely in winter.
Buying on Torch Lake: what to know
Septic inspection at sale
Torch Lake Township requires a septic and well inspection at sale for properties within 500 feet of the water. We get it scheduled early.
Private or shared frontage
Shared frontage usually means an association lot and dock rules. Ask for the association documents before you write an offer.
Short term rentals
Rules differ by township. Milton Township requires an annual license and Torch Lake Township sets conditions. We check the exact address.
Bluff or beach
Many lots sit above the water on a bluff. Count the stairs and check the shoreline for erosion before you fall for the view.
Depth off the dock
Some shorelines stay shallow and sandy for a long way and some drop off fast. Use the 3D map, then look in person.
Buying a lake lot
Before you buy to build, confirm the soils will take a septic system and check the township shoreline setback.
Torch Lake questions
How deep is Torch Lake?
About 300 feet at its deepest, depending on the map. The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council lists 302 feet. The state survey contours on the 3D map go to 250 feet, and the deep trough runs down the middle of the lake.
How big is Torch Lake?
About 18,500 acres and 19 miles long, roughly two miles wide, with about 41 miles of shoreline. It is the longest inland lake in Michigan and holds more water than any other inland lake in the state.
Where is the Torch Lake sandbar?
At the south end of the lake near the Torch River bridge. The shallow, sandy shelf there is where boats gather on summer weekends.
Why is Torch Lake so blue?
Torch Lake is deep, clear and low in nutrients, and the light colored marl and sand in the shallows make the water look bright blue green. Clarity changes with weather and season.
Where is public access on Torch Lake?
There is a DNR launch at the Torch River bridge at the south end, a DNR access on Crystal Beach Road in Milton Township, the Torch Lake Township Day Park off US-31 with a launch and swim area, and a public beach in Alden.
What fish are in Torch Lake?
Torch Lake is a cold water lake known for lake trout, which have long made up most of the DNR’s survey catch, along with whitefish, cisco, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and rock bass.
Do Torch Lake homes need a septic inspection to sell?
In Torch Lake Township, yes. Its time of transfer ordinance, adopted in 2023, requires a septic and well inspection at sale for properties within 500 feet of the water. Other townships around the lake have their own rules, so we check the exact address.
