This 3D lake model needs a browser with WebGL. Ask us about Lime Lake frontage and we’ll send you the depth map.

The lake bottom comes from the Michigan DNR lake survey, whose deepest contour is 67 feet; the DNR’s 2011 report lists a 65 foot maximum. Height is exaggerated so the drop offs show. A guide, not a navigation chart.

Living on Lime Lake

Lime Lake sits in the wooded hills of Cleveland Township, about two miles north of Maple City, with M-22 and Good Harbor Bay to the north.

Lime Lake is a mid sized, spring fed lake. The bottom is mostly sand and marl, with some cobble and gravel, and wide shallow shoals ring much of the shore before it drops to about 65 feet, which you can see on the 3D map.

About half of the shoreline has homes and cottages, and the land around it is mostly woods. The Teichner Preserve on the northeast shore keeps a stretch of wetland and woods open to the public.

The lake has a long history: the Lime Lake Lumber Company built a mill here around 1880 and hauled timber down a plank road to Good Harbor Bay. Frontage is listed as private or shared, and every card above says which one it is.

Getting on the water

Lime Lake is big enough to boat and fish, and the wide shallow shoals along much of the shore are worth a look on the 3D map before you pick a spot for a dock.

It is a Type C trout lake, so trout season is open all year. The DNR stocks brown trout every year, and bass and northern pike round out the fishing.

Buying on Lime Lake: what to know

  • Septic inspection at sale

Leelanau County requires a septic inspection at sale or transfer for homes on septic. We get it scheduled early, because the report can change a deal.

  • Private or shared frontage

Shared frontage usually means an association lot and dock rules. Ask for the association documents before you write an offer.

  • Short term rentals

Rules vary by township, and they change. We check the exact address.

  • Watch for listings

Lime Lake listings are few, so set up an MLS alert with us and be ready to see a home quickly.

  • Depth off the dock

Some shorelines stay shallow for a long way and some drop off sooner. Use the 3D map, then look in person.

  • Buying a lake lot

Before you buy to build, confirm the soils will take a septic system and check the shoreline setback with the township.
