The Heart of the Peninsula: Why We Call Lake Leelanau Home

If you grew up in Northern Michigan like I did, you know that not all lakes are created equal. Some are for fishing, some are for sailing, and some are just for looking at from a distance. But then there’s Lake Leelanau—the massive, crystal-clear waterway that acts as the spine of our entire peninsula.

I’m Taylor Brown, and I work alongside my business partner (and mother), Janel Brown. We’ve spent decades navigating the local market, but more importantly, we’ve spent decades navigating these waters.

When clients ask me, "Why Lake Leelanau?" I usually tell them it offers the best of both worlds: the remote, "up north" cottage feel combined with the stability and community of a year-round neighborhood. But the real magic of this lake lies in its diversity. It’s actually two lakes in one, and understanding the difference is key to finding your perfect spot.

The Tale of Two Lakes: North vs. South

One of the first things I explain to buyers is that Lake Leelanau is physically divided into "North Lake" and "South Lake" by the Narrows. While they are connected, they have distinct personalities.

South Lake Leelanau: The Social Playground

Janel lives right here on South Lake Leelanau, so we are a bit partial to its charms. The South Lake is generally shallower and warmer, making it the go-to spot for swimming and water sports.

  • The Vibe: It’s vibrant and active. You’ll see pontoons tied up at the sandbars, families wakeboarding, and neighbors waving from their docks.

  • The Commute: For those who need to pop into Traverse City, the South Lake is incredibly convenient, often just 15–20 minutes from town.

North Lake Leelanau: The Deep Blue Retreat

Head north through the Narrows, and the water changes. The North Lake is significantly deeper (dropping over 120 feet in spots) and tends to be cooler.

  • The Vibe: It feels a bit more historic and quiet. The shoreline is dotted with classic cottages and is often favored by serious anglers chasing walleye, trout, and perch.

  • The Location: You are closer to the charming town of Leland (Fishtown) and the Lake Michigan shoreline. It feels like a true escape.

The Narrows: Where It All Comes Together

If the North and South lakes are the lungs of the peninsula, the Narrows is the heart. This is the "no-wake" zone that connects the two bodies of water, but it’s so much more than a channel—it’s a destination.

Living here means jumping in the boat on a Tuesday evening and cruising down to the Narrows for dinner. You can dock the boat and walk right up to:

  • Dick’s Pour House: A local institution. If you want a burger and a cold beer in a place where everybody actually knows your name, this is it.

  • Boathouse Vineyards: There is nothing quite like sipping a glass of locally grown Pinot Grigio on their covered porch while watching the boats idle by.

  • Capital Dog: The perfect pit-stop for the kids (and adults) to grab a gourmet hot dog or ice cream without leaving the water’s edge.

The Lifestyle: Why People Never Leave

Real estate data can tell you about property values, but it can’t explain the feeling of living here.

It’s the early morning "glass" when the water is so calm the sky reflects perfectly on the surface—perfect for a slalom ski run or a quiet kayak. It’s the winter culture of ice fishing shanties popping up like small villages, creating a year-round community even when the snow flies.

A Practical Bonus: Stability One subtle but great advantage we have here is the Leland Dam. Because the water levels are regulated, we generally see much less variation than you might find on the big lake or other unregulated bodies of water. It’s just one less thing to worry about when it comes to your dock and shoreline.

Why Experience Matters Here

Lake Leelanau real estate is complex. You have to navigate questions about weed lines, frontage types (sandy vs. rocky), and rental regulations.

Because we are a mother-son team, we offer a unique blend of perspectives. Janel brings over 20 years of intense market experience and negotiation power. I bring a fresh eye for marketing (with a background in professional photography) to ensure your home looks as stunning online as it does in person.

Let’s Get You on the Water

We don’t just sell homes here; we live this lifestyle every day.

  • Janel lives directly on South Lake Leelanau. She knows the water levels, the best sunsets, and the hidden gems because she sees them from her window every morning.

  • I live just a few hundred feet from the water. I'm constantly moving between the lakes and town, keeping a pulse on the market and the community.

If you are thinking about buying a cottage, a forever home, or selling your current property on the lake, you need a team that understands the water as well as the contract.

Reach out to us today. Let’s grab a coffee and talk about how we can help you find your place in Lake Leelanau.
